It
was the Dancers' Career Development Board who helped Rachael
Price study for a new career.
Rachael
knew she was coming to the end of her career as a professional
dancer.
"After
13 years, I needed a new career but I wanted to start at the
same level of status I'd held as a dancer. I didn't want to
start as an office junior!"
She
visited a number of educational establishments offering a
secretary course before choosing to study for a Secretarial
Diploma at Pitman Training London, High Holborn.
"As
soon as I came into the training centre, it was the professionalism
of the staff and the opportunity to sample the secretary courses
that impressed me," Rachael remembers.
"The
Excel
audio was brilliant and I was surprised how easy it was to
follow, especially as I had no computer or office skills at
all."
Having
secured funding from the Dancers' Career Development Board,
Rachael embarked on her Secretarial Diploma course.
"It
was hard at first, moving from an artistic career to learning
about office work but I'm very disciplined and I stuck at
it."
Even
before she had completed her diploma, Rachael began to apply
for secretarial jobs.
|
"Looking back, applying for jobs was quite an achievement.
But you've got the comfort of knowing you're equipped - the
courses are so extensive."
Before long, Rachael's job search was successful, yet she
still needed to earn her diploma.
"Well Pitman
Training's opening hours are fabulous! I can do a full
time job and study as well. It seems that work helps your
studies and your studies help your work. Your brain is more
stimulated," Rachael confirms.
She also claims that her biggest achievement
in her studies has been gaining a distinction in her Excel
Expert exam - something she would never have dreamed of
doing at school!
As she approaches the final stages of
her diploma course, Rachael says she'll miss the team at High
Holborn.
But now she can hold her own in an office
environment.
And as she says, "it's nice to
know I'll be earning at least what I used to earn in a good
year as a dancer."
