Not Going To Uni? Read This!
Not Going To Uni Wasn't The End Of The World - And Now I'm The Boss!
"Don't get me wrong," says Keith Wymer, CEO of Holborn Training, the Pitman Training franchisees.
"I would have loved to have gone to university, but back then, everything was means tested and my father's paper income was much greater than his take home pay, so we couldn't afford for me to go. So it's ironic that I have been working in education for more than 20 years!"
"To be honest, I wasn't mature enough to go to university in any case, but now when I see my wife, friends and colleagues, all of whom got degrees, I do feel a little jealous. And as it happens, I got both a degree and a masters as a mature student, much later on."
How I Found Out About Pitman Training.
"But I began my career as an admin assistant in 1973 and learned how it all works by trial and error. Later, I worked at Reed Employment and that was where I first heard about Pitman Training and shorthand in particular."
"I picked up pretty quickly that Pitman trained candidates were easier to place than others and therefore I earned my commission more quickly."
"And I also noticed that these candidates were really good at their jobs. Pitman's style is vocational training which means that you learn actual skills for use at work, rather than theory. So it's quite different and often more useful than a degree."
You Don't Need A Degree To Make It To The Top.
"I took myself off to get some practical skills and worked my way up through a number of blue chip companies until one day I was the owner of multi-site, multi-national call centre operator. And then I came full circle and bought into the Pitman franchise system."
"So my point is that you don't need a degree to make it to the top - you need skills."
Go If You Can But Don't Worry If You Can't.
"Today, I would say that if you can afford to go to university, do it. But if the huge fees put you off, along with the likelihood that your degree won't give you the skills to get a job, try us."
"I believe that if you are smart enough for university but aren't going then you should take a diploma level Executive PA course, legal secretarial course or medical secretarial course as an alternative."
"Or at a minimum get an MS Office Plus diploma so that you can demonstrate top level skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Access as well as learning to type properly. At least that way you'll have transferrable skills to offer an employer."
"You see, for the forseeable future, there will be increasing competition to get jobs, especially for young people. So those with the highest skill levels, who can just get on with it with minimal supervision and who don't need on-the-job training, are obviously more attractive to employers. It's about gaining a competitive advantage. And a Pitman Training diploma is not just about getting a job, but starting you off on a real career."
"Lots of our former students earn fabulous money working in interesting careers in leading organisations too. You'll probably need a first from a top university to match them!"
